Debating the NY Times
What is Debating the New York Times?
Debating the NY Times is a unique program offered by Total Academic Center that gives students the chance to practice public speaking and critical thinking skills in an academic setting. The course also gives student confidence in their opinions and their character and prepares them for college and adult life. This program is for students in grades 7 through 10.
Students take up and present a position on a NY Times topic on a current controversial issue. They must construct arguments carefully and comprehensively, then present an oration on the topic and debate the controversy. Instructors guide the discussion in a constructive and productive manner.
The class requires students to think critically on their own opinions and those of others, and to practice key communication skills. Students learn to interact and discuss topics in a mature, academic manner, and learn how to strengthen arguments and improve persuasive reasoning. In the process, students also gain confidence in their social skills and poise in public speaking. Articles are provided by The NY Times: Upfront, a news magazine for teens, published by Scholastic Inc..
For students at a lower level, we also offer a Debating Contemporary Issues course, which is oriented towards practicing English speaking and conversation skills, as well as preparing and presenting their opinions.
