SAT I (Reasoning)

Our SAT I Workshop is taught by instructors who have years of experience helping high school students of different abilities to improve their SAT scores. TAC’s intensive program covers all three areas of the SAT: Critical Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Our approach is to familiarize students with the different kinds of questions they will encounter and teach them the best tools needed to tackle these questions on test day. We also give students ample opportunity to practice answering real SAT questions, and give them feedback in order to improve their problem-solving skills and build their confidence. TAC also offers an SAT Vocabulary class where students learn tips on how to remember definitions and ascertain the meanings of key words found on the SAT.

The SAT Reasoning Test

The SAT is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors in preparation for college admission.  It is a measure of the critical thinking skills a student will need in college and gives college review boards a standard on which to base their selections for incoming students. Though the SAT is only part of the total application process, it is an important piece of a student's college application.

The SAT is comprised of three sections: Critical Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Each section is scored in a range from 200 to 800. The final score is the sum of all three section scores.

TAC offers four standing courses in SAT preparation. Students taking these courses take three SAT model tests throughout the session, to show areas of weakness and overall improvement in score. As a critical part to college entrance, the SAT is both challenging and demanding for students. Strategies, practice, and familiarity are key to solving the SAT.

SAT I – Vocabulary

The SAT Vocabulary class is a rigorous and thorough review of the most common and difficult words found on the SAT. A strong college-level vocabulary is the key to doing well on the SAT, as well as preparation for collegiate studies. Through focus on memorization and application of the SAT terms, students will be greatly aided in understanding passages, answering questions, and writing the SAT essay.

SAT I – Writing

The SAT Writing section (60 minutes) is often the most problematic for many students. Students are asked to answer multiple-choice questions regarding the fine points and nuances of the English language, as well as write a thoughtful and well-structured 25-minute essay, which will account for 30% of the student’s Writing grade. Our SAT I -Writing class focuses on the correct usage of English grammar and punctuation, both on the SAT and for future college studies.  The class will teach students what the SAT will ask them to answer, what clues to look for on the SAT, how to prepare for test day, and how to organize and compose a high-scoring essay.

SAT I – Critical Reading

The SAT Critical Reading section (70 minutes) is designed to test the speed and efficiency of a student’s reading and understanding of English questions and narratives. Students must be able to read and analyze passages, use their knowledge of vocabulary effectively, and use reasoning skills to answer multiple-choice questions. Our SAT I - Critical Reading class is intended to help students get the most out of their potential on the Critical Reading section. The class emphasizes helping students use their knowledge and reasoning ability towards quickly and effectively solving the problems presented to them in the text.

SAT I – Math

Our SAT I Math class reviews the many topics presented in the Mathematics section of the SAT. The SAT Mathematics section (60 minutes) tests students on all areas of mathematics from their school studies and includes subjects as wide-ranging as exponential growth, absolute value, functional notation, linear functions, manipulations with exponents, and properties of tangent lines, as well as testing student skills in estimation, number sense and advanced logic to answer the multiple choice and student response questions. The SAT Math class refreshes students’ memories and teaches new strategies, to help students better understand what they’ll be expected to know on the SAT.
